I’m a tried and true enneagram 4 with the biggest sweet tooth and a love for sweat pants, foggy days, and giant dogs. When I don’t have a camera in my hands, you can usually find me working out at the gym, thrifting 2nd hand treasures, exploring new places in nature, snuggling my 200lb English Mastiff (Ludo), seeing the newest movie at the theater with my husband Josh, or day-dreaming up the next wild + crazy idea for a photoshoot.

Hi, I'm Julie-- I've been finding worlds inside my camera and creating art that transcends reality since 2010. For the past 14 years, making dreams come to life through photography has not only been the greatest escape, but my favorite form of expression, and where I've come to feel most at home.

So much of who I am and what I create is the fruit of nostalgia. Treasured memories from my past. The girl I once was with a wild imagination who I never dared to let go of. I equate nostalgia to be like that little space between sleep and awake – nothing there is real, yet when we’re there we can be our truest self. I wish for everything I create to feel like that – not fully in the past, nor present in reality – but somewhere amidst that little slice in-between, soaked in dreams and memory.

It felt like my face was burning off but my family doesn't mess around when it comes to the size of our bonfires (we've been told you can see them from the end of the road like a beacon in the sky😆) and I refuse to miss a creative opportunity. Sooo... worth. 😘🔥

It's like picking amidst all my children— nearly impossible— but if I HAD to pick my top 4 favorite photos of 2024, it would be these.📸

As I inspect what it is about these particular photos that make them a *favorite*, I find that it’s the ones that were either born out of curiosity— a new place I stumbled upon. Or the feeling of choosing to let go of control and hold myself to no expectations. Or the refinement found under the pressure to work through a struggle and commit to a vision. They are the ones that connect me most to the core of my *why* and take me back to the spark of excitement and discovery I found in creativity when I was young. They don’t need to be ground breaking compositions with expensive clothes/props, or far away lands, or even paychecks attached. It is the ones I sought out to create with my heart that fill me with pride and wonder and make me feel deeply attached to them.🥹

So what does that teach me about creating fulfilling art going into the new year?👇

✨Find the right moments to push through on a vision, even if it’s hard— know when to be gentle with yourself, and when you need a little *kick in the pants* to make it happen because greatness is on the other side.

Most people didn't believe me, but here we are🤷‍♀️ I knew since I was in 6th grade that I wanted to be a photographer when I grew up. I remember being brushed off by teachers and guidance counselors when they'd talk about college and I'd say "I'm not going to college, I'm going to be a photographer". They'd smile and nod and say "oh, that's nice🙃" and urge me to still pick up pamphlets and the job fairs and "consider my options".

I remember in highschool when we had to take the one-on-one *career quiz* with the guidance counselor. I remember telling her I didn't need to take it because I'm going to be a photographer. She of course still responded with an "oh, ok that's nice🙃 well you still have to take the quiz". And I vividly remember the career result I got from the quiz was "Puppeteer".... PUPPETEER!!! 😂 She looked at my results and shared what schools would support this career path and said "what do you think? Is this something that interests you that you would consider pursuing?" I remember staring blankly at her like ...YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING MEEEE...🙃🫠😂 The fact that a quiz telling me I should be a freaking puppeteer was taken more seriously than my heart knowing I WAS going to be a photographer is just bonkers to me.😂

People told me there was no market for creative photography. That the money was in commercial and weddings and family. "No on is going to pay you for that kind of photography". Yet... Here we are🥹 7 years into my full time creative photography business and when people ask what I do I get to say "I'm a photographer and I help people rekindle their imagination and bring their dream photoshoot to life." I'm finally hitting income goals I never imagined I would see, traveling to incredibly beautiful places, meeting the kindest most creative people, pursuing my passions, and making a life and living out of my art. It's honestly surreal and I don't think it ever won't be... But *little me* always knew we'd make it.😌

Just a few of my favorite moments from Chelsea + Rob’s wedding this past September. They got married at The @woolvertoninn tucked away in the quiet countryside of Stockton NJ, surrounded by a small group of the people they love most.😌

There’s just something about the setting of an intimate micro wedding that fills me with inspiration— I really enjoy the low key time frame that allows me to be present in the moment with my creativity, and how closely I get to interact with each person there, allowing me to feel more like a friend and less like just an extension of my camera. This day was full of genuine joy, tangible love, really sweet family moments, and extraordinarily kind people— all the things I value most about weddings.

No, I don't mean like pumpkin coffees and apple picking and warm sweaters and sunshiney joy of jumping into a pile of crunchy leaves😅 I mean gloomy skies, dark forests, and early evenings that call for us to sit still and be alone with our thoughts. It's the chill in the air, our skin losing its warm summer tan, and the way the leaves transition into warm browns and deep burgundies as they sink under the water and drape along the creek bed. It's the romanticism of the death of a season. It's the call for rest. It's the whole world turning over and going to sleep that fills me with an inspiration like none other. That is what I mean when I say "autumn inspires me".😌

My name was destined for me🥹 I was told often while I was growing up what the meaning of my name was but I never really understood how it pertained to me as a child-- I was always like "yeah, I am young, what about it?🤷‍♀️"

...But as I've grown older, I can clear-as-day see how my name was destined for me. It's in holding onto the most magical bits of my youth that I've truly found who I am and what my purpose is here on earth. To dream, to create, to inspire, and to keep that childlike spark of imagination alive. I will always be ✨Youthful One✨

Can I be totally honest? You DON'T need to be a professional model to take beautiful photographs. You just need the right photographer to make you feel comfortable and held, know your angles, guide you through your shoot, understand your vision, and help you see yourself the way you deserve to be seen: beautiful, magical, empowered, like a storybook come to life.✨

Most of the people I photograph have never had their photo professionally taken and you'd NEVER know it. They often arrive unsure and nervous, and with my guidance and posing cues, they look like they've been posing for the camera their entire life within 10 minutes.🤭

Alyssa was super nervous for her first photoshoot, but she still showed up, did the dang thing, and just LOOK at her gorgeous photos!! I am in awe.🤩 (Spoiler alert: so was she 😘)

Been reminiscing about my little fox girl photoshoot from back in 2020 so much lately. (Howww has it already been 4 years!?) This sweet character was inspired by my love for the cozy + eclectic, with bits and pieces pulled from the nostalgia of my childhood.🦊💼📖

When my sister and I were little we’d pretend we were wild animals getting ready for the winter. We’d play foxes, wolves, or squirrels, and “harvest” onion grass bulbs and wild berries from the back yard. We’d collect trinkets from our playhouse and “search for shelter” from the world around us. We had wild imaginations, and my little fox girl is a perfect depiction of if our make-believe play evolved into something real.

I found the write up I had created for the character back in 2020, and I want to give past-me a hug because this is so cute, intentional, & creative, and inspires me to get back into more character creation like I used to do so often:

“She's a nomadic spirit who prefers being alone over traveling in packs— Which means she doesn’t have a home or a family, but she’s content in the fact that it’s probably for the best since she’s always on the move. Her favorite food is butter biscuits with wild raspberry jam and black bitter coffee. When she’s not napping or traveling to the next place to call home, you can find her exploring abandoned houses, collecting trinkets, and reading the books she finds along the way. She’s sweet and innocent looking on the surface but don’t be fooled… she can easily hold her own due to her books smarts, hiding skills, and cunning/witty ability to talk herself out of any situation. She’s drawn to soft wools, knit materials, aged photographs, and anything old with a story to tell. The first storm of winter is on its way, so she’s on the move, searching for shelter and a place to stay warm and dry." 🦊🍂✨

Once I learned to let go and fully trust the process, that's when I started to really be able to create the photos of my dreams. (Yes, it's still a learning process from this perfectionist photographer🙋‍♀️) Remembering that the end goal shouldn't JUST be about *getting the shot*, but to enjoy the moments it takes to get there too, because the experience can be just as rewarding as the final photos.

The laughter, the conversation, the learning curves, the dancing, the exploring, the bad weather, the things that don't look quite how I imagined them in my head-- it's all part of the journey, and if we can learn as creatives to enjoy (or at the very least, roll with) all aspects of the creative process (both the good and the bad) instead of just focusing on the end goal, there will be more grace towards ourselves, and more joy surrounding our work when we finally see the results of what we've created.✨

The older I get the more I fall in love with November. Often glossed over and left riding the coattails of Octobers shine, November is the forgotten month. Giddy anticipation for fall has lost its luster and is replaced with countdowns til Christmas and wishes for snow. But there are beautiful things happening in the quiet corners of November that many who move too quickly will miss. A subtle stirring— a preparation for sleep. The leaves only weeks prior, renowned for their vibrancy quickly forgotten because they’ve fallen, but do you not see we’ve been given the gift to now walk amongst them— a sea of burnt umber like warm fire at our feet. Cascading down to cover every inch of the earth— decoupaged across even the surface of the water— deep black and sinking burgundy. The death of a season. The whole world turns over in a hazy hush. Do not curse the way she dims her light, for she is only welcoming us all to slow, slow, slow down… close your eyes… breathe… the rest can wait.🍂

This shoot was spur-the-moment inspired by November’s beauty, my adoration for the way fallen leaves look on the water, and my mood as I prepare to end my 2024 photography season and shift into hibernation mode.

The most beautiful autumnal, golden goddess, mama to be.🥹 What an honor to take these photos. I can’t believe we met as strangers on the internet 10 years ago when I asked you to explore an abandoned house with me, and now here we are— your BABY due in a week and we are frolicking through golden flower-filled meadows in the most dramatically elegant dress talking about plans to bake cookies and be cozy and hang out while you are home with your sweet girl this winter. Time flies and it's been a beautiful journey-- So much love to you @r.e.hellrung ❤️

It's the sneakers + gym socks with a ball gown for me😜

Lynnewood Hall is a 110 room Neoclassical Revival mansion that was built in 1899 and is one of the largest last remaining gilded age mansions in the US. It has sat abandoned and inaccessible to the public for years… til now. I can hardly believe I had permission to not only come walk the halls that are just dripping in history and so many untold stories, but to bring my camera and create art and new memories there as well.

My final hurrah for spooky season. In years past October has always crept up on me and I never had the time to do many spooky shoots, so I decided to really lean into it this year and it’s been fun! I find I often get the most inspired when I reach outside of my own self-made box and try new things, play around with different moods, exc… It’s not often that I shoot spooky concepts, so I left this shoot feeling so inspired (despite waking up at 4:30 to make it to sunrise🫣)

The concept was a further expansion on the self portrait I shot a couple years back of me dragging the skeleton through the graveyard, mixed with some inspiration taken from the Crimson Peak movie, and cozy comforting October aesthetics.🍂☕

Introducing the black widow spider sisters🕷️🕸️ One of two super limited group shoots I offered this year for spooky season!🎃

If there’s one thing I really love about digital photography, it’s the fact that I am not limited to just what I take on my camera at the shoot. Setting up the photoshoot is one part, clicking the shutter is another, but for me I feel like my work really comes to life in the post-processing. What I mean by that is, I always tend to look at my raw photo like a blank canvas for me to paint on. What will the color story be? How will my editing vary based on the mood I’m trying to evoke? What textures can I layer in or how can I alter the image to really create something unique and make the viewer feel transported? Sometimes my editing is very straight forward, but this was one of those shoots I knew I would want to play around with alot in post.

You KNOW I’m such a sucker for color, but I have to say, these black&white shots really feel like the entirety of my vision come to life. Inspired by old black + white horror movies, and vintage film you’d find in a dusty old attic. Double exposures, motion blur, and scratchy grain— there’s so much character in the imperfections.

Imagine this— you’re 15 years old at summer camp, sitting around a fire making s’mores with your friends and swapping spooky stories about illusive creature run-in’s your friend of a friend of a friend told you about years ago. You swear it really happened… or at the very least… you want it to be real… No one believes you, but at the same time… who can really prove it didn’t happen? There’s an unsettling shift in the air and you scoot closer to your friends as you turn over your shoulder and try to peer through the dark woods behind you. It’s just a story, but what if…. It wasn’t.👀

Tales of cryptids have been told since the dawn of time. Creatures that people believe to exist or claim to have seen, yet have never been proven to exist. From aliens, to Loch Ness Monster, to the infamous Big Foot, and so many more— they’ve been a part of our storytelling for almost as long as I can remember— stories that have largely been told at night, while sitting around a campfire.🏕️

So what if cryptids really were out there? And not only that, but what if they went to summer camp, and swapped stories around a campfire just like us. What would that look like?

Just to mention a few, Big Foot would probably lead all the hikes, and Moth Man would be a master of Entomology and butterfly catching. Alien’s favorite camp activity most def would be star gazing, Jackalope would always come in first in the sack race, and Nessi would be spending all her time at the lake earning her ecology badge. There’s people watching, and shadow puppet competitions and alllll the s’mores you can eat. They’re all best friends and every summer they count down the days til Camp Cryptid starts so they can reunite and continue their adventures.👽👣🦋

The final photos turned out so spooky + ethereal🤩 I never expected that a photoshoot where you can't even see the models faces would be one of my all time favorite photoshoots I've ever done, but truly it is.

And I think that's because it forced me to focus less on just taking pretty photos of pretty faces, and more so on the unseen emotion that comes from movement, light, shadows, silhouettes, hands, and storytelling.✨

I have been debating for over a year now whether or not to share this photo. It’s so unlike any of my work or any of the moments that would typically catch my eye to take a picture of. It’s a little disturbing and dare I say even boarder-line aggressive compared to my usual fairies and flowers, and I felt like if I shared it, it would confuse people or just go unnoticed (which it might🤷‍♀️). But it makes me feel something and that is the important part right?

Art is meant to move you— to evoke a feeling— to make you uncomfortable— to cause an emotion— to make you wonder. Also reminding myself that this is my account and I can share literally whatever I want without reason. So I don’t know why today of all days I’m choosing to finally share it, but here it is. From the end of my lily pad shoot with @thecommercialkid two summers ago. The last photo of the evening, taken after they enjoyed a quick mad dash skinny dip in the lake as I packed up my camera bag and the dusky blues of July settled in across the water. A moment composed of post-shoot endorphins, bruised knees, pale skin, and a little 🩸.

This photoshoot was everything I didn’t know I needed. There are days where I feel like a sponge being continuously wrung dry over and over without any time to soak up new passion, and I wonder where my *creative spark* has gone, and then… I plan my own photoshoot and it’s like a dam breaks loose and I am flooded with creative rejuvenation and all feels right in the world. That was this shoot for me.

Photographers/creatives, if you can relate to the feeling (especially if you do your passion for a living), this is your reminder that it is SO IMPORTANT to make time to do your art for yourself. It is not selfish. It is vital to being a deeply sensitive, deeply creative being who can successfully continue to create for others as well. If you do not fill your cup first, how can you expect to pour into others?

There is something that happens for me when I plan a shoot that is totally *my own idea*, *my vision*, with no money/transaction involved, without worry of how it will “help my business” or “will others like this” but instead fully focused on: “Do I like this?”, “Does this inspire me?”, “Am I enjoying the creative process in this moment?” —It’s like this self made box breaks away and I am reminded why I fell in love with photography to being with. This is not a new feeling. This is a disciplined practice I have had to integrate into my work for many years so that I can continuously fall in love with my passion while still serving others well.

When I got together with Lily I expressed that I didn’t just want to take conventionally beautiful photos, but that I wanted to get creative with our setting, the dress, and the posing in a way that feels fresh and unexpected. Pushing myself to think outside the box is where I thrive lately and I’m really happy and creatively satisfied with how these came out— even in the places that otherwise felt unexciting and boring, like the clump of simple green bushes. I love pushing myself to think “how can I make this exciting?”, “How many ways can I pose my subject with this thing or this place in a way that feels new?” —All that to say, my creative cup is so full. The way I held my breath when the sky broke open in a torrential downpour because you never know what the reaction will be when adversity comes at a photoshoot...

I was pleasantly surprised when they all paused and joyfully exclaimed: "LET'S GO DANCE IN THE RAIN!!", bolted from the picnic, and began frolicking in the downpour together. IT WAS THE MOST WHOLESOME THING.🥹

It rained so hard I couldn't even see with the amount of rain in my eyes... Thankfully it slowed after about 15 minutes and we proceeded with giggle-filled portraits and sparklers with Gandalf. Everyone was soaked to the bone but, thankfully, if there was one thing that was salvaged, it was the cake... Because it's not a Hobbit birthday party if there isn't cake. 🤭🎂
